Yodio – BIRDY :)
Yodio – Science Poem
A warmth feeling –
soft and smooth –
making trees and plants grow,
water.
The boggy mist floating in the air,
like raindrops falling from the sky.
Cold and damp –
the strong smell of bark –
full of weeds and grass,
a forest with wet lands,
A quiet place.
Slimy and odd –
gross but wonderful –
crawling under heavy rocks,
bugs.
Little creatures crawling everywhere.
Big and grassy –
the summer to grow crops –
everything keeps growing,
a field.
Being plowed every year.
You couldn’t imagine anything like this,
such a beautiful world,
full of ecosystems.
In the Trench
On June 16 the grade ⅞ class from Turnberry went to Tillsonburg to learn about WW1 in 1914. In the fields were trenches, we had the experience what it was like for the soldiers to live, eat, and sleep in the trenches. Robin Barker-James’ was leading us through. The girls were the Canadians, they were trying to fight the boys played as the Germans. We also got to see all of the weapons they used in the war, how they were used and why they were used. Going down in the trenches was kind of intimidating. It was like going through a haunted house, you never know when someones going to pop out in front of you. You get that eerie feeling that someones going to either throw a bomb at you, or kill your partners.
“In the field where you can’t see your enemy. Will a grenade fly over the tall grass? BOOM, out of nowhere. I hold my gun ready to shoot. No one in sight, turning around the corner. Frightened. I throw the grenade around the corner just to make sure no one is there. Moving slowly, making no noise. With only the sound of grenades and guns. “
War isn’t only about shooting, it’s about responsibility and respect. It isn’t a joke. Soldiers fighting for our country have to live in trenches. I now understand how hard it was and how quiet you have to be while fighting. The trenches were small, I would never be able to stay there. Our soldiers are loyal and brave.
Where I’m From
from big pieces of bubbalicious gum,
and gummy bears.
From “can you help me”
and “it’ll be worth it”.I am from stereos
and making loud noises,
from dreaming and believing.
I am from Beastly
and I am the Wallpaper,
from gymnastics on mats,
from Nicki Minaj and Rihanna.
From playing Mario Kart,
and blowing big bubbles.
From a place where I lose my pencils a lot
and a place where I can laugh a lot
I am from a place
you wouldn’t believe.

Step 4: Once that is cut out, take the cut out piece and slide it to the top left side of the hexagon.
Step 5: Tape it to the left side.
Step 6: Take the hexagon, put it in the middle of the paper.
Step 7: Trace the shape all around the paper sliding it so all the angles and sides connect.
Step 8: Once the paper is full, draw the other half of the old mans head.
Step 9: Add details like hair, eyes, nose, and lips.
Step 10: Once the old mans face is drawn, the extra spots on the paper can be detailed.
Once you’ve finished this, you will now have an old man with a colourful background!
Health: Anorexia
Do you ever feel your body looks bigger in the mirror but your actually really skinny? If so, you could be suffering from anorexia. Anorexia is something anyone could have, but it’s mostly found in girls. There is a way to cure it, you could become closer friends with food, because people with anorexia seem like they’re scared of it. People will often find many ways not to crave food. Many girls think they’re overweight when they aren’t. So get used to eating food or you will suffer with anorexia for life.
Would you like some Flour with that Coffee?
The Book Thief is a book based on WWII. It is about Hitler and Jews. Liesel is a girl that is brought into a home because her parents were sent to a concentration camp. Hans Hubermann is teaching her how to read. Rosa and Hans Hubermann kept a Jew named Max Vandenburg in their basement. Liesel and Max become very close friends and tell each other the dreams they have about people they have lost in there past.
There are more then 1 type of conflict in the book. This type of conflict is External: Character vs character(s). The Protagonist is Rosa who wanted flour to go with her coffee in addition to trade flour for Liesel to read Frau Holtzapfel the book. The Antagonist is Frau Holtzapfel who would give Rosa flour but Liesel had to read Frau the “Whistler”. This made Frau Holtzapfel stop spitting on the Hubermann’s door. I think this conflict is a win-win, because the Hubermann’s didn’t get their door spit on anymore, and Frau Holtzapfel got the “Whistler” read to her.
A second type of conflict in this book, is Internal: Character vs Self. The Protagonist is Hans helped a dying Jew. The Antagonist is himself gave a Jew a piece of bread because the Jew was dying from starving. Hans got whipped and had wondered what he had done. At the time when he was getting whipped, I thought he was going to be killed, or sent to a concentration camp. But then I found out he just got whipped and was tortured from the pain. I know from my background knowledge that Hans will never do that again, because in the story Death was describing what had happened to Hans. He probably never would want to experience that again. This conflict is a lose-win, because Hans Hubermann got whipped and the Jew got a piece of bread.
Another type of conflict in the “Book Thief” is External: Character vs society. The Protagonist is Hitler who didn’t like Jews because he feels that they’re not good enough for the world. He thinks their world should be controlled by Nazi’s. The Antagonist is Hitler who gets the Nazi’s to kill the Jews so the Nazi’s could have the most population in the world. This is a win-lose, I know this from my background knowledge because Hitler wants to kill all the Jews. I know this because in the text Max is a Jew and he has to hide in the Hubermann’s basement for protection.
Maitland Valley Watershed
1. www.sourcewaterinfo.on.ca
- Water Source Protection is protecting municipal drinking water, so it has no bacteria in it.
- We get our drinking water from wells at our homes, and out of rivers. Farmers get there water from the river but if it has some kind of chemicals in the water, they will get their water from wells.
- We can get some of our water from ground water, which is also known as an aquifer.
- Watershed’s can be different from each other, some can have more affects and features, and they may also cause problems and concerns.
- Our Maitland watershed has 80% of agricultural land.
- Most people get there drinking water from well systems, but other get it from private wells.
2. www.healthinspections.ca
- If restaurants have bad water, they can get reported and get there water from either well water, ground water, or rivers.
- People need to be notified when their water has bacteria in it so they are not serving it to people.
A watershed is a area that acts like a funnel, collecting water and making it go into rivers, lakes, and oceans. It works when they have non-use full water, and that has bacteria in it. You can find a watershed near a lake, ocean, or river. We use watershed’s because we have some water that has bad chemicals in it.
I’m focused on the issue of dirty water. If the Maitland River has dirty water, nobody will have drinking water. There would be no fish if the water was dirty.
Example: If fish live in a river, lake, or ocean and the water is dirty that is like people living in a world full of smoke. You can’t breathe.
We can improve this problem by having farmers keeping there buffer strip’s clean when they are doing crops.
The Book Thief
The grade ⅞ class from Wingham, and Snow Lake, Manitoba have been reading the book “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak. We have been using skype to read and backchanneling on our thoughts. The character I have chose to write about is Rosa.
Rosa is strict. She gets very impatient when things don’t go the way she wants them to. She is a disrespectful person, who gets mad over the littlest reasons and swears all the time. One morning Hans was playing music for Liesel; Rosa got mad and told Hans he couldn’t do anything and started swearing at him. She doesn’t like her job, because she washes peoples laundry all the time, and their going poor. Rosa is also demanding; she demanded Liesel to call her momma.
When Rosa Hubermann hit Liesel with a wooden spoon, it reminded me of a time when my mom told me about her life when she was a kid. She told me that if you had your elbows on the supper table you would get hit with a wooden spoon. I think that’s rude, my mom told me that it hurt, bruised, and swelled when she got hit for having her elbows on the supper table.
My opinion on Rosa is she is a very rude person, to hit Liesel with wooden spoons, and she want everything her way, also swears at people.
I think Rosa is this way because maybe when she was a young girl, she didn’t have a mother to teach her wrong and right things, and maybe her mom hit her with wooden spoons. Maybe her mom didn’t treat her right, and grow up to act like her mom.
I think the author included Rosa because she is Liesel’s foster parent. I wouldn’t understand the book if Rosa weren’t in it because if Liesel’s mom left her, who would she be living with? I wouldn’t feel right being in a foster home, with parents who are demanding you to call them momma; Although Rosa does have kids of her own- but they don’t live with her.
I think that something will end up happening to Rosa later on in the book, like maybe she might do something wrong to get sent to a concentration camp. I also think that Hans, Liesel, and Rosa might go poor, and she might stop bringing in money from work; and they won’t be able to pay for anything.
I wonder if Rosa was treated rudely when she was younger?
